Charity of the Week – Mercy Hospital Foundation
Set up in 2007 The Foundation is responsible for developing giving opportunities and encouraging charitable contributions from within the community towards the work being carried out in the Hospital. Funds raised through the Mercy University Hospital Foundation are used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment, to enhance and develop services and to help Hospital staff in providing a world-class service in a world-class hospital.
This year anyone running in aid of The Mercy will receive a t-shirt that they can personalise by writing in the name of the loved one they are running for on a customised front panel. These new t-shirts will give each Mercy Supporter the chance to honour the person who has inspired them to run in aid of Hospital.
Proceeds raised will benefit the Mercy Cancer Appeal, which aims to raise €876,000 to fund key services and advancements in the treatment of and research into many cancers; and in particular The Mercy Cancer CARE Centre. A further €261,000 is required to fund the development of the CARE Centre which will provide a quiet, safe place for patients and families dealing with a cancer diagnosis to come to receive support through their cancer journey.
Did you know?
Erica Mulvihill, Cancer Nurse Specialist at the Mercy has spoken about the difference funds will make: “Being a nurse dealing with cancer patients you are their advocate, you are their voice and their guiding hand when adversity strikes. It is a great privilege to be involved in this journey with patients and their families. The Cancer CARE Centre will be hugely beneficial, and as cancer nurses, it will aid our practice immensely at the time of a devastating diagnosis. It will be a safe haven in comfortable, non intimidating surroundings where privacy and dignity are paramount, a non-clinical environment where patients can sit with family and nurses and go through the news that they have been diagnosed with cancer.”
