Charity of the Week – Clare’s Wish Foundation
Clare’s Wish Foundation was founded in 2013 and is supported entirely by individuals, businesses and community groups. We are the only Irish charity dedicated to providing wishes exclusively to adults with terminal illnesses.
The foundation is named after the founder’s sister, Clare, who was born with Spina Bifida and who died at the young age of 24. After moving to Ireland in the mid-70s, Clare became a fan of the Irish entertainer, Red Hurley; she collected all his records and decorated her bedroom with his posters. Her one wish was to meet her idol in person. In 1978, that wish came true when Clare and her family met Red following his concert, spending several hours talking and singing with him. Clare never forgot that moment and Red Hurley’s kindness provided an everlasting memory for Clare’s family.
In 2011, the father of Clare’s Wishes founder passed after a courageous five-month battle with pancreatitis; his passing impacted Kevin greatly and changed his outlook on life: he wanted to give back and the idea for Clare’s Wish was born.
